I never take advantage of offers from retailers.  It is just too difficult to find where you are going to get hit.  I'm sure there are legit offers out there that are worth it from time to time, but it is just not worth it to me.

Even you comment "I am sure you can tell what is coming next." suggests that everybody knows this.  So how do people who are vulnerable to being sold stuff reduce their vulnerability.  

My vote is to convince yourself that the 'free' stuff is not worth the hassle which will happen more often than not...
