I made some changes to the portfolios I am keeping track of. First, I dropped the mock retirement portfolio, as that was just tracking a target retirement fund which I couldn’t really compare against anything.
Next, I added my paper portfolio. This is a portfolio of stocks I have chosen on my own or from various sources of recommendations, but not the financial newsletters I subscribe to. This should be a good test of how well I choose individual stocks on my own.
Overall, it’s been a very strong week for the stock market. I would have to agree with the Wall Street Journal on the fact that “this bull has legs.” The Vanguard 500 Index is up 0.86% from last week, for a total gain around 3%. My newsletter based portfolio is doing tremendously, up 4.13% from last week for a total gain of nearly 10% over one month.
In my personal portfolio, I am happy to see Garmin (GRMN) finally gaining some ground. I also added several picks yesterday, including Chipotle (when I discovered they had just only opened their first store in Boston recently, I realized how much growth potential they had), Portfolio Recovery (who makes money off the massive amount of debt most Americans have), and Usec Inc (they mine low enriched uranium, even from old warheads!). Apple is still pulling a fantastic 35% return since the beginning of 2007.
